LawBreakers is definitely a game that looks like yet another Overwatch spin-off but once you take a look under the hood it’s completely or at the very least mostly different thing.
What is LawBreakers?
From a distance, LawBreakers is another MMO FPS game that has a team of 5 going ahead another team of 5 in a Hero Shooter style combat system where each Hero has their own unique skills, weapons and ultimate abilities thrown in an arena battle with Zero gravity areas thrown in the mix. This is where the similarities end. Though the base idea does feel like other MMO FPS games what LawBreakers does is completely ignore the past five years of FPS games and goes back to the high-paced and ruthless FPS gameplay where there are no Heroes designed for specifically support or offense and each Hero can rain just as much chaos.
Old School Fast Paced FPS Gameplay
LawBreakers is more of a re-imagining of the good old FPS games by by-passing the concept of classes as battlefield jobs. There are no tanks, no turrets, no mechanics, no healers or any other kind of distractions. LawBreakers goes as far as to remove scoping and traditional guns like snipers so that every player is required to move, fly and constantly deal damage. From the get go, LawBreakers, makes it clear who its targeted audience is and in this case LawBreakers seems to be aiming towards gamers that enjoy old-school FPS gameplay.
Nine Classes & 18 Different Characters
LawBreakers doesn’t use ordinary class archetypes such as healer or tank but rather differentiates each class based on their distinct style of movement which is something hardcore FPS fans can genuinely appreciate. Take the Wraith class for example. The Wraith class increases movement speed by sliding on the ground whereas it uses its dual wielded knives to swim forward in Zero gravity areas. If you’re playing as a Harrier you can fly backward to shoot lasers from your shoes to attack pursuers and helps you navigate in Zero Gravity areas. As far as the weaponry is concerned they’re big, deal explosive damage and look like something taken directly out of an Unreal Tournament game.
Zero gravity Maps
LawBreakers emphasize the importance of movement in gameplay but it adds Zero gravity movement in the mix which adds more variety and appeal of the game. Some maps have Zero Gravity areas where players can move freely in the air. Naturally, some classes are better suited for Zero gravity combat. One example would be Maverick the Vanguard has a jetpack fuel that lets the player navigate freely in Zero gravity areas and get around the map with ease.
Will LawBreakers be Popular?
LawBreakers does look a lot like Overwatch but it only “looks” like Overwatch. Once you actually play the game you’ll soon realize that it is an entirely different kind of FPS game which you may or may not enjoy. If Steam reviews are anything to go by then LawBreakers is going be around for a while and if you enjoy fast paced gameplay with massive explosions then LawBreakers is definitely worth your time.
