The year 2017 saw many inventive and compelling games that have pushed the boundaries of gaming as a whole, from the Switch’s best game The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with its beautiful open-world design and masterful execution to Cuphead with its familiar hand-drawn rubber hose style and infectiously catchy music.

10. Dragon Ball FighterZ

Hot off the heels of Bandai Namco’s hugely successful Dragon Ball Xenoverse franchise, Dragon Ball FighterZ promises a return to the golden era of Dragon Ball fighting games with easy to learn but difficult to master two-dimensional combat and spectacular fight sequences.

In the original fashion of fighting games, Dragon Ball FighterZ is executed in a two-dimensional combat system with three-on-three matches.

This, however, is where the similarities end, as its unique combat mechanics introduce various combat styles to use in combination with the vast roster of characters.

This then adds a whole new dimension of depth and variety to the game’s already expansive fighting system.

Complementary to the wide variety of attacks that the Z fighters can dish out, the game runs using the top of the line Unreal Engine 4.

Compounded with its unique cel shading method, this game feels much more vibrant and detailed than ever.

Overall, Dragon Ball FighterZ offers a deceptively diverse combat system and a powerhouse of a game engine to polish every detail to make every punch and blast feel like it was taken straight from the anime itself.

9. Anthem

From the well-known gaming company Electronic Arts, Anthem is a stunning take on the FPS RPG hybrid genre with a surplus of creative potential and cooperative gameplay to keep you playing for hours on end.

Similar to Titanfall, Anthem offers a wide arsenal of exosuits known as “javelins” which can be customized to fit the playstyles of all gamers.

However, you can then customize each and every exosuit with a wide variety of gear that can be crafted or earned through gameplay.

8. Kingdom Hearts 3

So far, the game appears to be visually and mechanically spectacular. The director of the game, Yu Suzuki has decided to overhaul the combat mechanics of the installment, making it seem like a “puzzle game that anyone can play with a strong emphasis on choreography”.

Overall, Shenmue III offers a brand new world to explore, with both inventive combat and dazzling graphics using the Unreal 4 engine that can impress new players and veterans alike.

5. Shadow of the Colossus

Not as much a sequel as it is a remake, Shadow of the Colossus is a revival of the PlayStation 2 sleeper hit sharing the same name, this time on the PlayStation 4.

Shadow of the Colossus on the PlayStation 2 was truly a revolutionary game, with a vast open-world aspect almost never seen before and truly daunting boss monsters.

It had already received a “high-definition” remake in 2011, but with the PlayStation 4’s much more powerful system, it is understandable that Sony would want to take another stab at such a classic title.

Overall, if the reveal trailer is anything to go on, Shadow of the Colossus retains all of the mechanics and aspects that brought it into fame in the first place, all with spectacular graphics that ups the whole mysterious and intimidating atmosphere that it was going for.

4. Far Cry 5

The long-awaited continuation of the Far Cry series, Far Cry 5 takes place in the diverse terrains of Montana and revolves around a notorious doomsday cult.

Similar to its predecessor, Far Cry 4, the story revolves around the protagonist taking part in helping local citizens fight against the oppressive cult known as The Project at Eden’s Gate.

In similar fashion to Far Cry 3 and 4, the game seems to be focused on a larger-than-life villain, the leader of the cult known as The Father.

As Vaas Montenegro and Pagan Min were both incredible antagonists, The Father will most likely be the highlight of the game.

Far Cry 5 promises to both retain the open world aspects that made the last two games popular along with new additions like flying and AI recruitment, which make up the recipe for a very memorable addition to a very popular franchise.

3. The Last of Us Part II

The anticipated sequel to the 2013 survival horror masterpiece, The Last of Us Part II returns to Joel and Ellie 5 years after the ending of the first game.

Rather than Joel as the main character, the game focuses on Ellie, who is much more aggressive and spiteful towards an unknown antagonist in the trailer.

Although Naughty Dog has not revealed much about the game other than the fact that it will come out in 2018, but it shows much promise given the two teaser trailers about it.

Although it is still too early to speculate, the game’s director has revealed that The Last of Us Part II will have the most advanced character models Sony has ever created.

It will be very compelling to watch the game as it blooms and reaches our desktops.

2. God of War (2018)

The continuation of the God of War series brings upon a new era of gameplay for the franchise. Being the first of its kind for the new generation consoles, the improved graphics and smooth gameplay are definitely a bonus.

Not only are the fundamentals amped up, but the storyline brings a twist. Instead of having Kratos killing gods, the story is focused on Norse mythology, where Kratos goes on his journeys with his son Atreus.

A huge difference from God of War (2018) and the previous titles, is the camera angle. Before the player would have a open world type of setting, with different angles at different times.

It could be a two-dimensional representation of a three-dimensional setting, or a huge third person view. The new game allows for a more in depth third person view, that immerses the player into a feeling of connectivity with the character. Making it feel more alive, instead of the difference in camera angles.

1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most hyped of video games of 2018. The very long awaited prequel features Dutch Van Der Linde, the leader of the outlaw gang, that the protagonist of Red Dead Redemption, John Marston was a member in.

While the plot is still variable, others begin to speculate that Arthur Morgan could be the protagonist of the prequel.

With the PS4, Red Dead Redemption 2 will have greater processing power, and more vibrant graphics. This will allow more things to occur during gameplay, making a fuller more rich experience for the player.

Red Dead Redemption 2 will offer a new experience for returning players, and new players alike. Having a deeper plot, and a greater understanding of the characters in the Red Dead Redemption series.
