Sudden Strike 4 as the name implies is the fourth entry in the long running World War II based RTS game. Considering Sudden Strike 4 was in the making for over 7 years people naturally had high expectations for the game – maybe too high. While Sudden Strike 4 does seem fun and challenging but one can’t help but feel that there was a lot of untapped potential in the game.

Sudden Strike 4 The Graphics

Sudden Strike 4 is the first Sudden Strike game that is ported to Consoles so many people were expecting next gen graphics but what Sudden Strike 4 delivered is neither something marvelous or substandard but just feels like a modernization of previous sudden strike games. Though the infantry models and terrain do match the semblance of World War II but that’s also where the praise ends. There just isn’t enough level of detail for the graphics to truly make an impact. In short, the graphics only feel like a new cover of paint with good art rather than a next gen experience.

Sudden Strike 4 A War Story

The story of Sudden Strike 4 is split into 3 factions Allies, Soviets, and Germans. Sudden Strike 4 puts players in charge of a set number of soldiers in World War II’s biggest battles spawning around the world in countries like France and Russia which we’ve seen in video games many times at this point. The voice acting, on the other hand, is solid and genuinely feels authentic. If a Russian or German soldier are shouting their accent are easily distinguishable and do resemble actual native accents which is a big plus for the immersion of the game.

Sudden Strike 4 The Gameplay

The most glaring issue in Sudden Strike 4 is that its gameplay feels extremely outdated. While the combat does have some amazing new features such as the new doctrine system, Infantry options and heavy vehicles such as tanks and aircrafts. Another great point are the special abilities that can be unlocked for each infantry class which includes anti- tank and anti-aircraft abilities.

The issue comes down to the game being slow paced whereas the amount of time it takes to do autonomous tasks can easily take a fair chunk of time like manually controlling supply trucks to resupply ammo. The game only provides you with a set number of soldiers which means you’ll have to rely on those soldiers to accomplish your objective and complete tasks. The most frustrating part is the AI that feels unresponsive and glitches which can lead to a variety of issue in the game. While the doctrine feature is a step in the right direction but there is no way to know how to earn points to earn stars which means until you reach the hidden arbitrary number required you won’t be leveling up anytime soon.

Conclusion

In the end, Sudden Strike 4 has a lot of potential but due to inconsistent A.I, bland story and subpar graphics it falls short of being a hit.
